The Funkafied Black Album

Bike riding isn't my only passion. Making and mixing music is a close 2nd. This is a mash-up I did a few years ago of Jay-Z's Black Album with The Meters (aka the godfathers of funk). I'm a huge fan of The Meters and I always thought their music would be perfect for an MC. So, I gave them one. I pretty much just chopped, stretched, and matched up Jay's verses with the structure of the The Meters' songs. In some cases, I rearranged the verse and chorus of the instrumentals to match up better with Jay's lyrics. The last song of the album "My 1st Song" is mashed up with the Modest Mouse song "Dramamine." I really wanted to mix that song, but I couldn't find a Meters' track in 3/4 time, so I had to use something else.

I have uploaded a few of the tracks that you can listen to by clicking the players below. If you dig it, you can download the entire album by clicking here. Long live the funk!!

On a related note, there were a lot of quality remixes of The Black Album. The most famous (and probably the best) was Dangermouse's "Grey Album," which was The Black Album mixed with The Beatles' White Album. That thing is pure genius. I think it really helped show what hip hop sampling is all about. Sampling is not simply "stealing" music. Sampling at its best is the creative use and arrangement of prerecorded pieces of audio. Real sampling is art. Check that thing out, if you haven't already.

Wolf Parade

If you're into indie rock stuff, I highly recommend Wolf Parade's "Apologies to the Queen Mary." It's definitely one of my favorite albums. The video is crazy, because indie vids have to be, right?

A-Jack

I don't know if anybody calls him that, but I'm going to start.

What is taters?

Tater has this sign in front of his house down in Louisiana... or, wherever it is he's from down there. He seriously didn't come out to the trails the other day because he was going to a crawfish boil. Yummy.

Dig

I had the pleasure of riding these trails a few weeks back. Some of the sickest trails that I've seen in person. They get about 10 times gnarlier as soon as A-Rev lands that hip and takes off to the left.

Keepon

I was browsing for Spoon videos and stumbled upon this. It looks simple enough, but it's actually a very complex robot called Keepon that is "designed to interact with children by directing attention and expressing emotion." And it dances... probably better than I do. Check the beatbots website for more info on the little dude.

Chase Hawk

Jake caught this crazy pic of Chase at Pinter's trail jam last weekend. Such a rad looking trick. Is he wearing a beanie in So Cal??? Actually, it was pretty damn cold (50 something and windy... we're spoiled).

Dirt Art

Zach and the crew are up to more dirt sculpting in Gnar Cal. Something about the red dirt surrounded by the pine trees just makes this place look amazing.

KSU

My alma mater just pulled off a huge upset victory in the tourney over USC. I'm pumped. Beasley is a freak. He's kind of like Mike Aitken on a bike... it just comes easier for him than for everybody else.

Whip It Real Good

I posted a pic of Lil Larry similar to this awhile back. This one is different, but still just as dopealicious.

Rocking with a cello is just bad ass. Too bad she's not a member of the band anymore.

UFO

Ride BMX dubbed this picture from Pinter's Jam "UFO - Invert." But, if you follow LD, you know that steez could only be Bretty Boy. He and Andrew both were holding their own with the big dogs... I don't think he'll be a UFO for long.

Steez Of The Week

Hucker has been having some bad luck lately. First hidden gets plowed, then he breaks his hand, and then he loses all his hair (well, maybe he did that one on purpose). But, he still has some of the sickest dumped 3s in the game.

Here are a few photos from Heath Pinter's St. Patrick's Day Trail Jam. That's Andrew Jackson and Brett Auerbach doing it for the home team up top. Midget Corey and Chase Hawk are getting rad below on the sweetest step up ever built.

And wait until you see pics from the jam we went to today... can you say Aitken, Bohan, Hawk, and Nyquist?

Get Down With The Hound

I can't understand this exactly... but, it's a beatboxing basset hound that you can control. One of the silliest and freshest things I've ever seen. Click here and watch him get down.

The Wall That Was

I don't think I ever posted this pic of Brett up on the wall, but it's pretty rad. Unfortunately, you can't get to the wall now because of the damage from the rain. But, I think there are few of us dedicated to getting this place up and running again. Skeleton will rise from the grave... BWAHAHAHA.

Road Trip

We took a little road trip up the coast this weekend. We met up with Zach Dank and rode with some rippers at four different trail spots. It was off the radness the meter for sure. Zach got some pics and some footage for his upcoming video "From Dusk 'Til Dirt." Which, from what we saw this weekend, should be insanely good. Zach, Alex Reveles, Ryan Howard, Brandon Semenuk, Jaime Goldman, Greg Watts, Cam McCaul, and Brian Miller were all shredding like it's going out of style. We finished off the trip with a party and fire on the beach. Good times.
